As our work week comes to a close, we’d like to take a moment to give a serious shout out to one of our favorite ladies, (and Libby’s step-daughter) Jessica Kirby.  Originally hailing from our beloved island of Newport, Jessica has spanned her wings over major cities like Los Angeles and New York- slowly but steadily growing her personal fashion collection along the way through endless hours of scouring vintage flea markets, combing through second-hand shops and scoring fab hand-me-downs from friends and family.  Jessica’s blog, Dress Like a Million has recently been gaining some serious media traction (um hello Lucky magazine!!) and continues to be the go-to guide for gals in search of indie-bohemian-glam inspiration.  This week we were able to sit down with Jessica to pick her brain and here’s what  great information we scored! Also, be sure to check out her blog (be prepared to growl with jealousy- everything she wears looks picture-perfect on her!)

LKRE: What is your current occupation?
Jessica: Project Manager and Consultant for a large consulting firm in NYC

LKRE: What are your hobbies?
Jessica: Writing and posting on my blog Dress Like a Million, shopping (vintage and thrift mostly), my animals, yoga, organizing my closet, decorating my apartment and rehabbing old furniture

LKRE: Where do you live now and where have you lived over the past 5 years? Which place was your favorite?
Jessica: I’ve lived in Brooklyn, NY, Los Angeles, CA, Newport, RI and now in Manhattan, NY. I don’t think I can pick a favorite, they all have great things to offer, but I definitely love the City, there’s just nothing like it.

LKRE: What is your favorite article of clothing?
Jessica: My most treasured pieces are a pair of Ferragamo flats I got in Brooklyn, my Justin boots I also got in Brooklyn, a Silver Fox fur coat I found in Newport, a green suede hat I found at a vintage market in London and the gold and amethyst ring my Great Aunt handed down to me.

LKRE: What are your favorite tunes?
Jessica: I love everything, I listen to rock & roll, country, folk, pop, right now I have Florence & the Machine, Mumford & Sons, and my brother’s band Wait for Green on repeat on my iPod.

LKRE: What is your favorite food?
Jessica: I could eat Mexican and Thai food every day and of course I love a good Margarita.

LKRE: Do you have a favorite magazine?
Jessica: Vanity Fair and Lucky (and the New Yorker when I can afford it!)

LKRE: Obviously, we’re all about the blogosphere. What are your go-to blogs?
Jessica: Design*Sponge and Thought Catalog

LKRE: Who do you consider a fashion icon?
Jessica: My Great Aunt “Aunnie” is 85 and is still very glamorous. She always looks put together. I’ve never seen her in sneakers. As for celebrities, I think Sienna Miller and Kate Moss have impeccable style.

LKRE: How would you describe your personal style?
Jessica: My style is very influenced by my mood and my surroundings, it’s somewhat modest and reserved. I tend to mix bohemian, preppy and masculine styles but I’m all about subtlety…and tailoring!

LKRE: We know you’re a Newport local….What’s your favorite part about coming back to the island?
Jessica: Definitely seeing my family and friends, and in the summer, going to the beach and getting a Del’s Lemonade.

One of our favorite places in the world is New York City. A place where as soon as you arrive, you are swept into step with fashion icons, finance moguls, celebutantes alike. As you quickly move down the avenues, you barely ever have a moment to stop and look up at the impossibly tall buildings that shoot high into the sky.  On the Southern border of Central Park lies the Shops at Columbus Circle- home to posh boutiques like Sephora, Thomas Pink and more. Right outside of this shopping mecca is a 75 foot granite pillar and atop is a larger than life marble statue of Christopher Columbus. Seriously. You just have to look up.

This fall, a genius man named Tatzu Nishi decided that New Yorkers needed to take notice of the art around them. Hence he created a totally unique art installation which aims to give the public intimate access to this 13 foot statue which has become a totally missed aspect of the city’s urban landscape.  As his first public project in the US, Nishi’s installation re-imagines the colossal statue of Columbus standing in a fully furnished, modern living room. Featuring tables, chairs, couch, rug, and flat-screen television, the décor reflects the artist’s interpretation of contemporary New York style. He even designed wallpaper inspired by memories of American popular culture, having watched Hollywood movies and television as a child in Japan. “Discovering Columbus” offers both a unique perspective on a historical monument and a surreal experience of the sculpture in a new context. Allowing us to take a journey up six flights of stairs to a fictional living room, Tatzu Nishi invites us to discover for ourselves where the imagination may lead. If you plan to visit NYC in the near future, we highly recommend that you checkout this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for yourself. The installation is up until December 2nd.

On this final day of Mercedes- Benz Fashion Week in New York City, we find ourself craving everything fashion. The September editions of our magazines (as huge as they were) are gathering dust and we’ve been following the shows in the Big Apple to sink our teeth into anything we possibly can. The media coverage of the hundreds of runway shows has been overwhelming, but we’re eternally grateful. It’s the blogs, newspapers and magazines that keep us feeling connected to the fashion metropolis- even when we’re actually situated in lil’ Newport, RI. So here’s a look at our favorite snap shots of the Spring 2013 looks. And remember- NY Fashion Week is most certainly NOT all about what is walking down the runway but rather the haute couture that spills out onto the streets of Manhattan worn by the show-goers, and what’s worn to the sparkly VIP after-parties. Alas, NYC you had us at hello.

One of our favorite pass times (when we’re not selling & renting gorgeous homes!) is scrolling through the culmination of international street couture as curated by Scott Schuman- founder/blogger/photographer for the acclaimed “The Sartorialist” blog. Beyond his blog, Scott’s work has been featured in the glossy pages of mags like GQ, Vogue Italia and Interview- not too shabby!   After leaving his position as director of men’s fashion at Bergdorf Goodman to take care of his daughter in September 2005, he began carrying a digital camera around and photographing people he saw on the street whose style he found striking. He then posted these to his blog, sometimes with short comments, always either favorable or open-minded. He is well known for photographing what have been described as ‘real’ people from the streets of Milan to the runways in Manhattan. The Sartorialist quickly became a regular read for fashionistas, both on the street and in the upper echelons of the industry. Scott continues to inspire us at LKRE, encouraging us to push past conventional fashion, urging us to take our own personal style to the next level. Who would have ever thought that a native kid from Indiana who used to work at Chess King would become an international fashion icon?

The fabulous, Lilly Pulitzer married Peter Pulitzer and escaped the hustle and bustle of New York City for the sand and sun of Palm Beach. With your husband running the family orange groves why not start a juice stand?! Lilly started her new business venture in 1959, inspired by her colorful nature, the entrepreneur launched a line of brightly colored shift dresses covered in playful prints to disguise her juice stained dresses. Lilly Pulitzer the clothing label was born.

It wasn’t long before her “classic shift dress” shot to international fame when Lilly’s old schoolmate Jacqueline Kennedy was photographed wearing a “Lilly” while on vacation. Lilly Pulitzer became a hit in all of the country’s most fashionable resort towns, and soon ’60s style icons were wearing Lilly’s designs!

“Jackie wore one of my dresses – it was made from kitchen curtain material – and people went crazy. They took off like zingo. Everybody loved them, and I went into the dress business.” – Lilly

Fast-forward 50 years and Lilly Pulitzer prints are still a favorite for all that lead colorful lives! I think every girl needs a little “Lilly Pulitzer” in their life.
