This past weekend, we were blessed with warm weather and bountiful sunshine- all of the ingredients necessary to prove that summer truly is here! While last week we saluted neutrals, this week, we celebrate COLOR- more specifically our 2 favorite colors together, acqua and coral. These 2 hues, indigenous to sunsets, beachside fun and sail boat soirees, look stunning as accessories, dresses and even inside the home. Complement a plush aqua chair with a bright coral accent pillow or don a gorgeous turquoise necklace when wearing a blazing orange maxi dress. Whichever way you decide to rock it, this dynamic color combo is bound for glory!

Summer Cuisine: Cucumber and Chickpea Salad

As we gear up for summer BBQs and get togethers, we’d like to share with you one of our favorite summer recipes! With vibrant colors, protein-rich ingredients, your dish will get rave reviews at any shin dig you bring it to this season! Bon Appetit!

Ingredients

3 tablespoons olive oil
1 (16 ounce) can BUSH’S® Garbanzo Beans, drained
1/2 cup tomato, chopped
1/4 cup red onion, minced
1 rib celery, sliced
1 cucumber, chopped
1 teaspoon garlic, minced
2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped
1 1/2 teaspoons red wine vinegar
1/2 lemon, juiced
1/2 lime, juiced
cracked black pepper to taste
1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

Heat 2 tablespoons of the oil in a sauté pan over medium heat. Stir in beans, cover and turn off heat. Set aside.
Gently toss all remaining ingredients in a large salad bowl. Add beans.
Serve topped with additional parsley, if desired.

Summer Neutrals

When we think of summer, most of the time we instantly think of bright colors. Vibrant corals, stunning blues and we can’t forget the metallics. Neutral colors often are forgotten about, taken advantage as an “old faithful” clutch in our closets that are faithfully ready to rescue us when we can’t seem to decide which colors go best with each other. When it is time to take a break from the intensity of color- neutrals will be there- a calming fashion pallet that seems to always look great on fresh, sun-kissed skin and salty locks.

A Toast to the Wild Women of Newport County

This past Friday, we all had the privilege of attending the Women’s Resource Center’s WILD WOMEN of Newport Luncheon. Our fearless leader Libby was named as one of Newport’s Wild Women- dubbed a “Trailblazer”- among 11 other fascinating local women. Despite the tropical storm brewing outside, the attendees of this luncheon were dressed to the nines as excitement and pride twirled through the room. There was an overwhelming- yet refreshing- air of empowerment at this luncheon- and as business women foraging our way in a male-dominated world- this 2 hour event during our busy work week was an inspirational reminder that to celebrate female leadership on Aquidneck Island. Keynote speaker Dr. Agnes Doody of University of Rhode Island gave a wildly entertaining speech recalling getting chastised by the Dean at URI for riding a bicycle to class. Back in the late 50′s, evidently it wasn’t considered ladylike for women to indulge in such physical activities. (Ha!) Dr. Doody discussed many of the gender barriers that she personally fought to break down and applauded us for the progress that women have achieved in the workplace and in society. A delightful event, we congratulate all of the women who were nominated as Wild Women- may you continue to inspire us!

Women We Love: Barbara Lynch Gruppo

One would never be able to guess that a high school drop out from Southie was behind the sleek, high-concept design of Boston’s B+G Oysters. From the fine quality produce and seafood to the beautifully crafted menus, this eatery is the perfect spot for an impromptu lunch as Libby herself indulged in yesterday while taking appointments in Bean Town. Enjoying a delectable sampling of local oysters, sipping on some mouth-watering clam chowder and noshing on a beautiful Sugar Snap Pea Salad with ricotta, mint and marcona almond vinaigrette. Is your mouth watering yet?

Libby has been a long-time fan of Barbara Lynch Gruppo- the woman behind B+G Oysters. One of seven children, Lynch learned how to hustle at a young age. In school, she ran bets for teachers on horse races while her peers were at Dave Matthews concerts. She refused to do homework and when her guidance counselor threatened her with summer school her senior year, Lynch dropped out. Island-bound, she headed to Martha’s Vineyard with a friend and took a job as a chef on a dinner cruise. Slowly but surely learning her way around the galley, Lynch was gaining skill as a cook, evolving into a talented chef. Before she knew it, she was being invited to interview at well-known restaurants like Michaela’s by celebrity chefs like Todd English. The rest is history. Now sitting atop a 6 restaurant empire- Ms. Lynch has got her hands full. Also the face of the Barbara Lynch Foundation- an organization dedicated to helping Boston’s youth develop life skills and providing educating about nutrition- there is little that Lynch can’t do. Wearing many hats as chef, restaurateur, philanthropist, and more- we salute Lynch and praise her for her determination and tenacity.

Sky Light-Sky Bright

Let’s face it, natural light is the best when it comes to interior design. There’s nothing better than large windows that the sunlight can cascade through, illuminating the entire room and yielding a delicious warmth that only the sun can deliver. One of our absolute favorite features in a home are skylights. Little Black Back Pack

It all started when Libby’s husband Kevin brought her to climb Mount Washington. Libby watched her husband as he strategically packed his Northface backpack for the trip and then with ease and grace, slung the pack over his shoulder and was ready to go. Libby looked down at her cumbersome weekender tote and realized that Kevin was on to something.
