Often associated as the color of love, pink is also known to have a calming effect on us. For us, pink evokes a feeling of happiness- a feminine hue that we love to see in fashion, home decor and especially in pastries!  We figured we could all use a color boost with this unseasonable weather. So think pink- it will make you feel better!

PINK MONTAGE

LIBBY BLOG END

On this gloomy March day as we all slowly adjust to Daylight Savings, we’d like to give a nod of appreciation to one of our favorite colors: yellow. Psychologically the happiest color in the rainbow, yellow is known to stimulate the mental processes and nervous system, activating the memory and encouraging communication.  Let’s hear it for yellow…the color of sunshine and promise!

As our work week comes to a close, we’d like to take a moment to give a serious shout out to one of our favorite ladies, (and Libby’s step-daughter) Jessica Kirby.  Originally hailing from our beloved island of Newport, Jessica has spanned her wings over major cities like Los Angeles and New York- slowly but steadily growing her personal fashion collection along the way through endless hours of scouring vintage flea markets, combing through second-hand shops and scoring fab hand-me-downs from friends and family.  Jessica’s blog, Dress Like a Million has recently been gaining some serious media traction (um hello Lucky magazine!!) and continues to be the go-to guide for gals in search of indie-bohemian-glam inspiration.  This week we were able to sit down with Jessica to pick her brain and here’s what  great information we scored! Also, be sure to check out her blog (be prepared to growl with jealousy- everything she wears looks picture-perfect on her!)

LKRE: What is your current occupation?
Jessica: Project Manager and Consultant for a large consulting firm in NYC

LKRE: What are your hobbies?
Jessica: Writing and posting on my blog Dress Like a Million, shopping (vintage and thrift mostly), my animals, yoga, organizing my closet, decorating my apartment and rehabbing old furniture

LKRE: Where do you live now and where have you lived over the past 5 years? Which place was your favorite?
Jessica: I’ve lived in Brooklyn, NY, Los Angeles, CA, Newport, RI and now in Manhattan, NY. I don’t think I can pick a favorite, they all have great things to offer, but I definitely love the City, there’s just nothing like it.

LKRE: What is your favorite article of clothing?
Jessica: My most treasured pieces are a pair of Ferragamo flats I got in Brooklyn, my Justin boots I also got in Brooklyn, a Silver Fox fur coat I found in Newport, a green suede hat I found at a vintage market in London and the gold and amethyst ring my Great Aunt handed down to me.

LKRE: What are your favorite tunes?
Jessica: I love everything, I listen to rock & roll, country, folk, pop, right now I have Florence & the Machine, Mumford & Sons, and my brother’s band Wait for Green on repeat on my iPod.

LKRE: What is your favorite food?
Jessica: I could eat Mexican and Thai food every day and of course I love a good Margarita.

LKRE: Do you have a favorite magazine?
Jessica: Vanity Fair and Lucky (and the New Yorker when I can afford it!)

LKRE: Obviously, we’re all about the blogosphere. What are your go-to blogs?
Jessica: Design*Sponge and Thought Catalog

LKRE: Who do you consider a fashion icon?
Jessica: My Great Aunt “Aunnie” is 85 and is still very glamorous. She always looks put together. I’ve never seen her in sneakers. As for celebrities, I think Sienna Miller and Kate Moss have impeccable style.

LKRE: How would you describe your personal style?
Jessica: My style is very influenced by my mood and my surroundings, it’s somewhat modest and reserved. I tend to mix bohemian, preppy and masculine styles but I’m all about subtlety…and tailoring!

LKRE: We know you’re a Newport local….What’s your favorite part about coming back to the island?
Jessica: Definitely seeing my family and friends, and in the summer, going to the beach and getting a Del’s Lemonade.

All of this sunshine has us dreaming of warm weather.  With warm weather, comes bright colors, citrus fruits and light-weight  fabric. We absolutely love tangerine- in our wardrobes, as accessories, in our homes. Something about this bright color keeps us warm during these last hours of winter. Here’s wishing you a sunny and bright day!

It takes a bold individual to paint a wall black. Perhaps a heavy-metal-obsessed teen or a goth-inspired college kid…We often associate black with gloom and sorrow however somehow we are drawn to this stoic hue as it appears in glossy images of luxurious home decor. We have learned that if you DO decide to use black as a base color in your interior design, that you must have ample amounts of space to work with. Using dark colors in a small space will always make it feel even smaller. On the other hand, using black in spaces that are graced with large windows is a win-win situation as the light offsets the dark. If you are blessed with a home with high ceilings and lots of square footage, we dare you to be bold and decorate with black!
