Archives for category: Autumn

We are 2 weeks away from Thanksgiving which means it’s time to start figuring out your plans (if you haven’t already). If you are hosting this year, be sure to give each guest an assignment like wine, appetizer, hors d’oevures, or a side dish. Certainly don’t do it all yourself as we know how busy you are! One of our favorite aspects of Thanksgiving- besides the food- is the table setting. Usually decked with warm autumnal colors like rust, ox blood and espresso- we are seeing tables accessorized with unique items this season such as antlers, artichokes and pears. These are some simple ways to bring your table to the next level. Check out some of our favorite looks below.

With temperatures dropping these days, sometimes our wardrobes tend to get a little drab. We gravitate towards blacks, grays and neutrals out of habit. Our summer whites and brights are packed away. Among the darkness of winter (and our wardrobes) there is a salvation print that will jazz up your ensemble. Be it daytime or night time, animal print accessories have a way of snapping you back into mainstream haute couture and out of your winter  slumber. Pair your favorite jeans with a white button up and a leopard print cardigan and ZING! You’re back! Throw a cozy animal print scarf around your neck when donning an all black dress & tights get up and you will instantly feel alive again. We are loving animal print, gold jewelry and a pop of bright color- say neon pink or yellow to really wake you up!  It’s Friday people, time to get decked for the weekend- we recommend you bring out YOUR inner animal ASAP!

On this blustering day in Newport, we would love to be at home cuddled up on the sofa with a cup of hot chicken soup. The wind is whipping outside and the temperatures are in the chilly mid-30′s. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. If you need some inspiration for dinner tonight, check out the below tasty recipe that will be sure to warm you up!

Chicken Tortellini Soup

2 cans (14-1/2 ounces each) chicken broth
2 cups water
3/4 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch cubes
1-1/2 cups frozen mixed vegetables
1 package (9 ounces) refrigerated cheese tortellini
2 celery ribs, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Directions

In a large saucepan, bring broth and water to a boil; add chicken. Reduce heat; cook for 10 minutes.
Add the remaining ingredients; cook 10-15 minutes longer or until chicken is no longer pink and vegetables are tender.

Yield: 8 servings (about 2 quarts).

As we brace for this Nor’easter tonight, we’re busting out our favorite rain boots to slosh around in! Rain or shine, we still have showings so we are leaving our soft leather Frye boots at home and instead opting for the protective thick rubber soles of our trusted rain boots. Quite often the thought of rain boots brings bright yellow, shiny, clunky footwear to mind. However, thanks to designers like Hunter, rain boots no longer make our tootsies look like yellow school buses! Here are a few of our favorite pairs- be sure to honk and wave if you see us purposely stomping in puddles tomorrow morning. :)

Sandy whipped through Newport like a bat out of hell and now that she’s long gone, our sweet city is wilted in her wake.  While some lucky souls survived the storm unscathed, others were sadly affected quite drastically. As we cruised through the streets of Newport this morning, the streets were littered with broken branches and fallen trees.  Our minds traced back to one of our favorite childhood stories, The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. This charming tale is about a young boy and a tree.  The tree always provides the boy with what he wants: branches to swing on, shade to sit and apples to eat in.  As the boy grows older, he takes more and more of the tree. The tree loves the boy very much and gives him anything he asks for. In an ultimate act of self-sacrifice, the tree lets the boy cut it down so the boy can build a boat in which he can sail. The boy leaves the tree, now a stump. Many years later, the boy, now an old man, returns, and the tree sadly says: “I’m sorry, boy… but I have nothing left to give you.” But the boy replies: “I do not need much now, just a quiet place to sit and rest.” The tree then says, “Well, an old tree stump is a good place for sitting and resting. Come, boy, sit down and rest.”  The boy sits down and is once again for the final time, provided for by the tree.  During this calm after the storm, we’d like to pay tribute to the fallen trees in Newport.  We thank you for the shade, the protection, the vibrant fall foliage that we have enjoyed year after year. Thank you for the beauty you have added to the historic landscape, and for the sweet oxygen you have given us. You will be missed.
