From home decor to fashion and accessories, arrows are everywhere these days. Arrows have been around for centuries and can evoke both the primitive tool and the directional symbol. Adding them to home decor is a fun way to bring this motif to the forefront in a subtle (or not so subtle) way. We’re loving this design trend right now and can’t wait to pick up a gold arrow cuff bracelet for our spring wardrobe!

You’re my vacation…
You’re my favorite radio station…
You’re my happy hour…
You’re my sweet and you’re my sour…

Now if only you could hear these lyrics set to an upbeat rhythm sung by the sultry voice of Brendan O’Hara, you just wouldn’t be able to hold yourself back from dancing!  Brendan O’Hara, a Miami local, has been bouncing his way around the US for the past decade sharing his music, story telling and a raw energy that must be simply seen in person. With drums, bass, keys, guitar and horns, Brendan mixes up a blend akin to a fine cocktail; organic,  fresh, chilled and intoxicating. His music mashes the finest of genres and delivers roots rock-meets-street stage music that Newport was privileged to see in the flesh at the opening of Forty 1 North a few summers ago. We first tuned into O’Hara several years ago at his weekly gig at the Delano’s Florida Room and subsequently have happily attended in his shows in New York City’s Ella and Boston’s Ames Hotel. We’re all waiting on the edge of our seats for Brendan’s return to Aquidneck Island and we’re hoping that if he reads this blog today that he may just add us to his summer tour schedule! Pretty please!?!

It takes a bold individual to paint a wall black. Perhaps a heavy-metal-obsessed teen or a goth-inspired college kid…We often associate black with gloom and sorrow however somehow we are drawn to this stoic hue as it appears in glossy images of luxurious home decor. We have learned that if you DO decide to use black as a base color in your interior design, that you must have ample amounts of space to work with. Using dark colors in a small space will always make it feel even smaller. On the other hand, using black in spaces that are graced with large windows is a win-win situation as the light offsets the dark. If you are blessed with a home with high ceilings and lots of square footage, we dare you to be bold and decorate with black!

Don’t get us wrong, we love cushy, soft decor with bold, punchy (even preppy) prints. However once in a while, we are drawn to the more industrial, hard-edged decor. Done right, “industrial chic” can come across as high-design. Done incorrectly, your space can end up looking like a dingy workshop! It’s important to mix in classic industrial pieces (i.e. metal pipes, Tolix chairs, vintage work benches) with shiny lighting fixtures and beautiful patterns.

The only thing better than a perfectly framed image hanging on a wall is a perfect cluster of them! We are loving the look of beautifully grouped pieces of art all hanging on the same wall. It adds so much character to the room. Group all black and white photographs or sprinkle in some colored prints- have fun with multicolored frames or keep them all white on white. However you choose to cluster- make it work for your surroundings!
